Many Ways to Say FOR in Korean
One
of the English words that seem spoken in several ways in Korean is for.
In grammar books, it is common to encounter particles or words that represent a
certain word in English, but it leads us to a lot of questions whether it can
also be used this way or that way. I have featured a noun and a verb in our
previous many-ways-to-say series, so I guess it's about time to tackle another
part of speech which is the preposition.
First,
we use for to indicate time or duration as in...
I will stay in Vietnam
for five days.
저는 베트남에서 5일 동안 머무를 거예요.
I've been working in this
company for seven years.
저는 이 회사에서 7년 동안 일하고 있어요.
I slept for 12 hours last weekend.
저는 지난 주말에 12 시간 동안 잤어요.
Second, we
use for to express that something is for the benefit of as
in...
I will look for a lawyer for you.
나는 널 위해 변호사를 찾아볼게.
I am working hard for my family.
저는 가족을 위해 열심히 일해요.
Exercise at least one hour a day for your
health.
건강을 위해 최소한 한 시간 이상 운동하세요.
Third, we use for to
express why we are thankful and sorry...
Thank you for helping me.
나를 도와 줘서 고마워.
Thank you for donating $1,000.
1,000달러를 기부해 줘서 고마워요.
I’m sorry for not doing my homework.
숙제를 안 하지 않아서 미안해요.
I am sorry for coming late.
늦게 와서 미안해요.
As you may notice,
we use the following pattern to represent for in Korean- 동안 to
indicate time and duration, 을/를 위해(서) to
express for the benefit of, and 아/어/여 주서 to
express gratitude and regret. For intermediate learners, these patterns might
not be new to you, but there are a few more ways to express for in
Korean. This one is intended for our fellow learners who are new to the world
of Korean language.
