Learn Korean: Verb + 게?
Let’s take a look at the Korean sentence pattern Verb + 게(?). We often use 게 to convert state verbs (adjectives) into their adverb forms. For example, 크다 (to be loud) becomes 크게 (loudly) and 맛있다 (to be delicious) becomes 맛있게 (deliciously). But when used with an active verb in question form, it is our quick reaction to someone’s sudden change of action. He doesn’t state his intention, but we something in mind on what he is probably going to do. For example, I am watching a Netflix show with my brother when he suddenly stood without saying anything. It was around midnight so I thought he would go to bed. I said Are you sleeping? Are you going to bed? with the nuance Is that why you stood up? The main verb is 자다 (to sleep/go to bed). We take the verb stem (자) and attach 게. The actual sentence is 자게?
가게?
Are you going/leaving? (she stood up and pick her bag up)
밥 먹게?
Are you going to eat? (she said she is going to the kitchen)
한 마리 키우게?
Are you going to raise one
(dog)? (she asked me what I think it a cute breed of dog)
