Learn Korean: Verb + 여요
Let’s take a look at the Korean sentence pattern Verb + 여요. We use this to conjugate a verb into its present form. This process works only for 하다 verbs such as 사랑하다 (to love) and 좋아하다 (to like). If we get rid of 다, what remains are 사랑하 and 좋아하. Supposedly, they are conjugated into 사랑하여요 and 좋아하여요, but they are automatically simplified into 사랑해요 and 좋아해요. Yes, just say 해요. This 하여요 form can be found mostly in old written texts and we don’t wanna sound archaic in the modern world, do we? The 요 ending is dropped in casual conversations.
Its past tense form is 했어요. For instance, I loved is 사랑했어(요) and 좋아했어(요). Read 100 Korean Grammar Notes for a more detailed explanation.
