Let’s take a look at the Korean sentence pattern Active Verb + 다면서. We use this to bring up a statement we heard about someone from someone else. The intention is to verify whether it is true or not, or to simply start a new topic to talk about. For example, I bumped into a friend at the airport for the first time in five years. We chatted over coffee since we had much time left before the flight. Suddenly, I remembered one thing I heard from another friend about her; that she married a foreign guy. So I brought it up and said I heard you married a Korean guy with the nuance How true is that? The main verb is 한국 남자랑 결혼하다 (to marry a Korean guy). The past tense form of 결혼하다 is 결혼했다. We take the verb stem (결혼했) and attach 다면서(요). The actual sentence is 한국 남자랑 결혼했다면서(요)? We also use this when someone does something that doesn’t coincide with his previous statement. For example, I called my friend Kentaro to hang out with me on Friday night. He said he couldn’t because he was going to do some homework. I went by myself to the bar. An hour later, I went out to smoke and I bumped into Kentaro at the entrance. I said Hey, didn't you say that you were going to do some homework? I thought you said were going to do some homework. He lied and he's busted. Perhaps, he didn’t expect me to be there as well. The main verb is 숙제하다 (to do homework). We take the verb stem (숙제하) and attach ㄴ다면서(요)? The actual sentence is 숙제한다면서(요)? If the verb stem ends in a consonant, use 는다면서(요).
