Learn Korean: Verb + 사실이다
Let’s take a look at the Korean sentence pattern Verb + 사실이다. We use this to confirm that something is true or ask whether there is truth in something.
Example #1: It is true that we are getting a divorce. The main verb is 이혼하다 (to divorce). We take the verb stem and attach 는 것 because the verb in the that-clause is in present/future tense. Then, we add 사실이다. The actual sentence is (우리가) 이혼하는 게 사실이야 (이에요). 것 is simplified into 게.
Example #2: Is it true that I was adopted? The main verb is 입양되다 (to be adopted). We take the verb stem and attach ㄴ 것 or 은 것 because the verb in the that-clause is in past tense. Use ㄴ 것 if the verb stem ends in a vowel and 은 것 if it ends in a consonant. Then, we add 사실이다. The actual sentence is (내가/제가) 입양된 게 사실이야 (이에요)?
