Learn Korean: Verb + 줘
Let's take a look at the Korean sentence pattern Verb + 줘. The verb 주다 means to give. We add 주다 to another verb to add the nuance do something for someone’s benefit. It shows willingness to exert some effort for another person. We use this to ask someone a favor to do something for us. If I have an art project, I would ask my talented brother to draw one for me. The main verb is 그리다 (to draw). We conjugate the verb into its 아/어/여 form and add 주다. The actual sentence is 오빠 그려 줘. We can also say 주라 (low casual), 줘요 (polite) and 주세요 (high polite). If I am too drunk, I would ask my friend to drive the car instead of me. The main verb is 운전하다 (to drive). The actual sentence is 운전해 줘. Some 주다 verbs don’t require a space in between such as 도와주다 (to help), 빌려주다 (to lend), 보여주다 (to show) and 알려주다 (to inform).
밥 만들어 줘.
Cook me some food.
돈 빌려주라.
Lend me some money please.
불 켜 줘.
Please turn on the light
for me.
